Fifteen Fun Cat Facts

Our first list of Fun Cat Facts was a lot of fun.  Our second list of More Fun Cat Facts got a lot of response.  But a lot of people were asking "Why such short lists?"  With that in mind, here is a list of Fifteen Fun Cat Facts combining your favourite cat facts and ones you might not have known!




1- A cat's ability to find its way home is called “psi-traveling.” Experts have two theories as to how cats can manage this feat. The first is that cats use the angle of the sunlight to find their way and the second is that cats have magnetized cells in their brains that act as compasses.


2- A cat lover is called an Ailurophile.

3- The richest cat in history is named Blackie.  Blackie was left £15 million by his owner, Ben Rea.

4- A cat named Dusty has the record for most kittens. She had more than 420 kittens in her life.

5- In Britain and Australia a black cat is actually considered GOOD luck.





6- Female cats tend to be right-pawed, while male cats tend to be left-pawed.

7- A house cat can jump up to five times it's own height in a single bound.  If humans could do this, it would mean the average man could jump nearly 29 feet from a standing position!

8- A group of cats is called a "clowder."

9- A house cat's top speed on land is 39 mph (or 49 km/h).


10- Most cats are actually lactose intolerant, and drinking milk gives them upset tummies.

11- Cats can hear better than dogs. A cat hears high-frequency sounds up to 2 octaves higher than a person.

12- Sir Isaac Newton invented the cat door for his beloved cat named Spithead.


13- The cheetah is the only feline that doesn't sheath its claws when it is at rest.

14- Generally, a cat will have 12 whiskers on each side of its face.

15- Over 30% of households in North America own at least one cat.
